It is very important to know how to wear a mask correctly during a pandemic like this. According to data from the WHO on February 2, 2021, the number of people with COVID-19 disease has now reached 102,942,987 while the number of deaths has reached 2,232,233 in various countries in the world. This disease is caused by a virus called the Corona virus, which spreads through the air, so it is very easy to transmit to humans. There are three things we must do to suppress the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The first is wearing a mask, then keeping your distance and washing your hands. All three are very important to implement. It's very important to wear a mask right now. This is because the size of the virus is very small and can easily move and spread from sufferers to healthy people. Transmission occurs when people with COVID-19 cough, sneeze, or even talk without wearing a mask. When coughing, sneezing, or talking, a COVID-19 sufferer who is not wearing a root mask emits very small droplets. These droplets will fly in the air and be inhaled by healthy people who do not wear masks. Droplets can also stick to the surface of objects, which then transfer to humans when touched by the hand and then the hand rubs the eye or nose. The use of masks will be effective if worn correctly.

6 Steps to Washing Hands and How to Wear a Mask

Before wearing a mask, we should wash our hands first. Wash hands using the 6-step method of washing hands according to WHO standards for 40–60 seconds, or use alcohol and rub hands thoroughly for 20–30 seconds.
  • Pour liquid handrub (an alcohol-based antiseptic) on the palms of the hands, then wipe and rub the palms gently in a circular direction.
  • Wipe and rub the backs of your hands alternately.
  • Rub your fingers together until they are clean.
  • Alternate cleaning the fingertips in interlocking positions.
  • Rub and rotate both thumbs alternately.
  • Place your fingertips in the palm of your hand and rub gently.

The Purpose of Washing Hands

There are four reasons why we must wash our hands frequently, especially during the current pandemic season.

Defends The Body Against Disease

Hand washing using soap and water is more effective in killing bacteria that can cause diarrhea and various other diseases such as COVID-19, the flu, sore throat, hepatitis A, colds, and ARI worms.

Washing hands frequently can kill germs.

According to the Ministry of Health's Directorate General of Disease Prevention and Control, washing hands with soap is able to clean dirt and shed germs on hands. Germs are easily transmitted by hand. When germs enter the body, the risk of getting disease increases. Remember, even though your hands look clean to the naked eye, there may still be germs attached to them. Dirt and germs are still left on our hands if we don't wash our hands with soap and water.

Soap and water are more effective than hand sanitizers.

According to a study in the American Society for Microbiology, washing hands with soap and running water will be better than washing hands with a drop of gel from a hand sanitizer. Water and soap can also clean dirty and oily hands.

Preventing Potential Antimicrobial Resistance.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), antimicrobial resistance (AMR), especially resistance to antibiotics, continues to grow. In Europe, about a hundred thousand patients die from health care-associated infections (HAI) and diseases caused by bacteria resistant to antimicrobial drugs.

How to Wear the Right Mask

One type of mask that we can use is a health mask, which is usually used by medical personnel to treat COVID-19 sufferers. Before wearing a health mask, we must wash our hands with soap and water. Check the mask's condition first, making sure it's clean and free of holes. Then put the mask in the right position. The top covers the nose, and the bottom covers the entire chin. Then pinch the nose. Make sure the position of the mask tightly covers the mouth and nose and nothing is open.

A 1-ply cloth mask, commonly called a scuba mask, buff, or bandana, does make it easier for us to breathe, but this type of mask cannot protect us from the Corona virus. The material, which is only 1 layer of cloth, cannot withstand the coronavirus from entering our bodies when there are COVID-19 sufferers who cough, sneeze, or talk near us. Even though we have done the correct way of wearing a mask, this 1-layer mask is not recommended for use.

The WHO Health Organization recommends the use of cloth masks when in public places. Using a cloth mask is considered more protective than not wearing a mask at all. The thing to remember when using a cloth mask is to always wear a clean cloth mask and wash the cloth mask after no more than 4 hours of use. Use a three-layer cloth mask, namely on the outer layer, use a waterproof cloth material, in the middle, use a cloth material that can be used as a filter, such as flannel, and on the inner layer, use a cloth material that can absorb water.

Surgical Mask

Surgical masks are disposable masks that are blue or green in color. This mask can cover the nose, mouth, and chin so that it can protect us from the coronavirus, which is transmitted by COVID-19 sufferers when they cough, sneeze, and talk. However, these masks are not as effective as N95 masks at holding back the smallest particles that may carry the coronavirus, even though we wear masks correctly.

The number 95 indicates that this mask can filter more than 95 percent of the smallest particles in the air, including viruses and bacteria. These masks are commonly used by health professionals, especially those who are at the forefront of dealing with COVID-19 patients, such as doctors and medical personnel. To get maximum protection, the mask position must fit snugly on the face so that there are no gaps for particles to enter from the side of the mask into the nose or mouth.

In addition to washing hands and knowing how to wear a mask correctly, another thing that must be considered during the pandemic is maintaining distance. There are four important reasons why we should keep our distance, namely: Keeping your distance will avoid the risk of getting droplets from COVID-19 sufferers. Droplets from sufferers can contain the dangerous coronavirus. Keeping a distance is also our way of helping medical personnel carry out their duties. The next reason is to help family members not get infected by us when we are in public places. Lastly, by keeping our distance, it is hoped that we can break the chain of transmission.
